Get Creative With Type

This last May, I was very busy working on some layouts and fonts for an upcoming book from Creating Keepsakes.
FONTS - I dig them! Almost all of my scrapping purchases include letter stamps/ stickers. I just can't seem to get enough of them. Getting chosen to contribute to this book gave me the boost I needed to use my stash in creative ways. The experience was fun and I learned a lot along the way. After that I moved on and got busy with other stuff. Then a few days back, I got an advanced complimentary copy and I was floored. There are 164 pages & projects in the book and they are bound to inspire you in one way or another.
For me, the personal high point is being in a book where THE HEIDI SWAPP contributed :)
You can read all the details and even join a discussion group following the links from here:
I hope to see some of you there :)
Have a great day!

So I took a break...

Haven't been very productive this past month... it could be the holiday season, it could be the Mumbai events, it could even be the weather... I just gave myself the permission to slack a little.
Weather has been unpredictable around here with morning frosts, high 70s in the afternoons and then again, showers through the nights!
We have the tree up, the bushes are decked with lights now... Nini has made pink snowflakes, Ayush keeps saying 'Nutcwacker' and I'm nesting...
Here's a project I did for Fiskars with the generous box of goodies May sent me. You can find the details at
Hope your holiday season is busy in a sweet way :)

I'm just tired! Ashis is outta town again since yesterday, won't be back till Friday. This month, he's been out every week. This is taking a toll on the kids. They miss him. And I just get tired of answering when will daddy be back. The weather's grumpy here and the kiddos stayed home sick. Not good :(
Anyhoo, I did the above pages using two sides of the same Candy land paper, one lined and one super busy in a fun way!
Also want to say hi to Lonely Scrapbooker. Thanks for pointing out the paper line in your comment. Here's the link for anyone else who wants to check it out.
And check Tricia's blog. She's up to something very good. Hope you will join in.
I have to scoot... Om has locked Nini's door and they can't open it... lot of noise there...
Hoping for a brighter day tomorrow

Happy Halloween to you and your kiddos... may you get all the candies you want and no cavities!
And if you want some scrappin candy, check the Luxe blog:
While you are there, check out the kits that they have put together. They rock !

Falling for Fall

First of all, thank you ladies for the suggestions about allergy cure :) Thanks for caring this much. It had rained heavily during late last week and that brought the allergy situation under control.

The previous Sunday, we had been to a park and walked down a trail. During that time, I had brushed against something poisonous and that led to swelling all over my body - itchy, bumpy, achy redness, even behind my ears and in my throat... I was miserable scratching myself sore but happy at the same time that I went on the trail... there are things you can notice and enjoy only when you are on foot whether in nature or in a big city.

Ashis was out of town for the major part of last week and I felt a bit swamped with things. He came back Friday night and Saturday afternoon, we headed outta town to the Great Smoky Mountains to see Fall colors. And can I just say, I'm falling for Fall?

It's GORGEOUS out here as we drove up and down Blue Ridge mountains... the kiddos were so excited to see the fallen leaves on the narrow shoulders of the mountain roads. We stopped and they jumped on the crispy leaves and when no cars were in sight, I was too!!! Hey, we are leaf-deprived in Florida!!!

Yesterday, the temps were bewteen 30 and 44 degrees... again, too cold for Floridians, but that did not stop me from stepping out and taking pics and yet again realizing that there was no way for me to capture what I saw... just feeling overwhelmingly happy to be alive and being able to see such grandeur with my two eyes.

We are heading back home today starting in about an hour. So, happy Tuesday to y'all :)

Good mail week

This has indeed been a great mail week for me :). The November Cocoa Daisy kit came on Tuesday, the new lines from Rusty Pickle came Wednesday and on Thursday a fabulous box of goodies came from another person. And I got busy with all my new toys... some I can share right now, others I have to hold off a little longer...
Allergy season is raging here. We have had to postpone going for walks indefinitely because the kids can't stop sneezing, I'm getting headaches and watery eyes. But I love how the sun feels and even though I'd rather be somewhere more colorful, I can still smell Fall here. Right now, I so want to be in Vermont taking Fall photos!
Hope you are enjoying a more colorful Fall and all that the gorgeous season brings.

Sing with me

"Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday Dear Nini
Happy Birthday to YOU!"
Yes, my litttle girl turned 6 today...
And Om and I got to spend part of the day with her class as it was Culture Day and parents were welcome to join in. So, we cut her birthday cake for the class around snack time in the morning after the Unity Circle. She was so excited she stayed up late and woke up early this morning... excitement was partly for the birthday and partly for being allowed to dress all fancy for Culture Day... the signs of exhaustion were apparent around playtime when she got upset that all her friends wanted to play with her bro... the pout lasted a good half an hour till lunch. When she started fussing, Om ran to the teacher and asked for help... he figured out all by himself that mom is not in-charge in a school setting and the teacher is the boss man... He did not complain, he asked very politely, ' Can you help? My sister Anusha Nini is crying... pease!' (and, no I did not misspell that :) I was just watching the whole drama unfold and the roles each of the kids involved assumed... play is such a clear giveaway of personalities! Anywhoo, she got over it soon enough and it was back to hugs and kisses, roses and sunshine once again in their little world and amidst cheers and claps they beat open the pinata with the help of Trey's dad.
We are ready to go out for dinner now and looking forward to a fun evening!

Unaccustomed Earth

The upside of being sick in bed is that you can read... so I have been reading my latest favorite "Unaccustomed Earth" and it is an emotional journey for me. I can identify with a lot of the things and can foresee many of the challenges to be when you want to raise children in a foreign culture... the values, the religious beliefs, the social customs - everything you learned growing up leave you unprepared to raise kids in a foreign land. And the challenges your children will inevitably face in trying to combine what they see in practice every day around them and what their parents talk about. The big question is how do you combine the best of both worlds... will that be ever possible for us?

On a more immediate note, Om's fever is lower today. We have been on the phone with Dr. K till 11 last night. He is an incredibly kind doctor. Several ice cold baths later, 104 degrees are finally backing down. The thing is that Ashis could not manage to give Om these baths, the boy just won't go in... so, I was holding him in my arms sitting on a little stepstool in the bathtub and pouring the water little by little over both of us... somehow, the thought of mommy taking the cold baths with him comforted him and that's all I needed. So, now I'm croaking like a frog... huh!

Until then...ribbit!!!

Last one standing

that was me till yesterday... now you can add me to the list of sick people at home. Nini went down first, then Om, then Ashis and now me... all of us under the weather. Last night, Om's temperature hit 104...yes 104, not 100.4 and the guy is 3. The after hours doc gave him meds that he couldn't keep down and so this morning, we went to see our regular peditrician who gave him a Tylenol suppository... did not know that Tylenol came in suppositories...huh!
So, Septra, Zithromax, Phenergen and other med-names-I-can't-spell later, they are all snoring away peacefully... thankfully... and I'm just trying to clear my mind... too much has been out-of-order since last Sunday. I'll shower, eat leftover pizza and just limp into bed.
Hope your week is going a little better than mine :)

So, I'm thinking

of painting the rooms in the house. I think they can use a fresh coat. It's not too bad considering we are raising two 'creative' kids in the house... well, at least the walls held up better than the carpet which we had been replacing room by room with laminate flooring for some time now. I do get these big ideas, but then get daunted... it's a LOT of work if we do it ourselves. And the thought of hiring professionals after the previous stair renovation episode is quite alarming. Moreover, the first time around, we had the freedom of choosing whatever colors, but now it will need sanding, priming and then painting... well!!!
All these thoughts take me nowhere, so I'll just go downstairs, make myself some tea, curl up with a book and my son... with my swollen wrist and aching fingers, I don't think, I'll be able to do much of anything else today.
And thanks for the birthday wishes... looks like I share a birthday with quite a few of you and your relatives... well, a belated happy birthday to you too :)

Happy Birthday

to me :) ... which was on the 5th and I had a great time. The Cake was delicious!

Here are a few stuff I created with the yummy goodness that came from Luxe. I am so in love with their Simply line. Is that weird... to be in love with patterned papers? Another favorite is Sprinkles.
I'll go back to playing with the papers. Hope you enjoy the weekend inspiration!

After the long weekend

it is always a bit hard to get back to routine. During the weekend, we went to the beach one day and to Ikea on Sunday, dined out most of the time and took care of extra chores at home. I'm glad to finally organize all the stuff for donation. Nini's room is fully organized now, well at least for the time being. The closets are clean too. Next in line is Om's room and of course, my studio which I organize and clean a little bit at a time whenever I can. Om is up and I'm scooting to eat breakfast with him. But before I go, here's a page I did for a challenge at 2 Peas. I wasn't on time, but it was fun working on it.

Stormy, gusty windy and rainy...

weather here... I didn't dare to take Nini to school today after I sat up most of last night listening to the wind howl. I hope Ashis makes it home safely tonight. He's flying from NC. The kids are bored to stay indoors. Ever since they heard in the news that gators and snakes are roaming the flooded roads, they are glued to the window to see them, but of course, thankfully that is not happening here... that would have me FREAKED!

I did manage to create some quick pages with all the awesome awesome new Chatterbox goodies. Here they are.

First day of school

is today, still too young for public schools and so still in Primrose. I am back from dropping off kiddo # 1 at school, saying a quick hi to the new teacher, making and feeding kiddo # 2 breakfast and I'm blogging. I don't know why # 2 insists on me roasting marshmallows for him now, he won't take no for an answer and I've run out of excuses... huh!
Here are a few links I've been meaning to post and here they are
So, here I am after my morning tea and hoping for a great day to unfold :)

Books, movies and art

Yesterday afternoon, I scrapped 3 pages and watched three movies. Today its raining and its dark outside. If the skies don't clear up by the evening, I'll have to postpone my photography plans till tomorow.
This last Sunday, I painted after a long time. It will be a gift to my parents.
Interpreter of Maladies is drawing me in. It's incredible. I'm hoping to get hold of Unaccustomed Earth soon.

"On windowsills,

Laila spots flowers potted in the empty shells of old Mujahideen rockets - rocket flowers, Kabulis call them. "
This line from Klaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns made me smile... hope finds its way through so much, doesn't it?
Man, 18 hours, 367 pages, my 9th summer read and I'm blown away.
Last night, I started reading Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri.
Last week of summer vacation before school's back in session. First grade.
I flew back from Utah last Saturday. Highlights are
  • I did not win
  • I loved Tim Holtz's classes :)
  • I made new friends

And today, I definitely plan on taking photos... my camera has been idle lately!

I'm here now

I have been reading this book, The Power of Now and it is having an impact on me. I'm trying to talk less and just live in the moment. So, this will be a small post :)
Carolyn and Bethany, I loved reading Kite Runner and the Splendid Suns is on its way to me.
These are a few stuff I created with the August Cocoa Daisy kit.
And tomorrow early morning, I'm leaving for Utah for SOY.

Rainy days

This is the front cover of the much-anticipated mini book book by Ali Edwards. I can't wait to peek inside. It's up for pre-order here
Lately, it's been raining here and boy when it rains, it pours. Om, Nini and I sit by the window and cuddle. Then they doze off and I just sit there listening to the rain. Sometimes, I read or just be lazy. In this last week, I finished reading "Three Cups of Tea", "The Kite Runner" and still waiting to get my copy of "Unaccustomed Earth".
Not been scrapbooking too much lately. I'll wait for Nini to start school. Today, we shop for school clothes and backpacks.

As promised

a long time ago... here are my Luxe pages, well, the ones that we are allowed to post at the moment... and some Rusty Pickle pages.
And another update: Our Venus Fly Trap has not yet managed to catch a fly and my children are worried that it will never gain weight!

Tuesday, July 08, 2008

Halfway into summer and we have taken a surprise road trip, visited MOSI twice, the zoo once, the doctor five times; had 4 pairs of swimmers' ears and two sets of new swim suits; consumed 72 cans of soda, 10 corns and 13 band aids; watched marathons of Peter Pan, Cars, Chicken Run, Meet the Robinsons, The Incredibles, Chicken Little and more; read 15 books, finished three journal projects with active kid participation and spent this whole morning waiting for our new puny Venus Flytrap plant to snap at a tiny elusive fly!
When I think of my summer days now, I also remember my childhood summers spent with my grandma. It almost feels like a past life, so different from my now! So, here's to those lazy country summers the thoughts of which always refreshed and enriched the days I spent in the city.
And before I go back to being lazy, l want to say THANKS for all the sweet things you guys wrote to me and all the good luck wishes you sent my way!!!

Hello June

Can you believe that 2008 is almost half way through? Boy, time sure flies!
Well after couple of bouts of viral fever at home, summer vacation has started. Nini has chosen to stay home this summer. She graduated Kindergarten this Tuesday, June 3.
My health is acting up again with meds making things worse. I blacked out couple of times and then decided on my own to reduce the doses. The last thing my kids need is for me to pass out before them and not know what to do.
Other than this, life is ok. Kind of learning that fewer expectations equals greater peace of mind. Wake up, make breakfast, clean, do laundry, do projects or play with kids, give them bath, feed them, hope for them to nap, take a quick shower, eat lunch, collect mail (some days mails brighten my day :), sneak away to scrapbook, give kids snack, cook dinner, do dishes, clean up, take trash out, blah, blah, blah... just not to expect any help with any of these would be easier if health wasn't giving grief.
Right now, I try to think that all time is quality time whether spent with kids or spent in improving the home environment (by cleaning, cooking, etc.) or maybe just improving myself reading a book, creating something, etc. or even packing for family fun during weekends.
No definite plans for this weekend, but probably will shop a bit to do some projects with Nini.
Wish you all a very happy weekend!!!
