Pretty finds

So, after some confusion, the kids actually went back to school on Monday, 1/2 but work was to resume the next day. We went to lunch at our favorite Asian buffet. It was blissful not having to referee two bickering kids! But there was still time between lunch and pickup, so I went to Goodwill which was only 5 minutes away from the restaurant. There were a ton of cool stuff that day, but I was very very strict with myself. But that plate and this cloche, I had no urge to resist...

was looong... but mostly in a good way.
First, I taught at Whim So Doodle. Here's Lore working on her art journal. She drew such beautiful flowers. And next to her is her friend Lisa who was using gold acrylic paint to create a stunning effect.

After class, we went to the cupcake spot, but they were closed. So we started to drive toward the Lightning forum. We were two hours early, so went to Ikea and ate dinner.

After dinner, we we parked at the rooftop of Channelside parking and went to see the Ringling Brothers circus. What daredevil acts!!! As a kid, I couldn't get enough of the circus.... not much has changed :) It was FUN!

Glitz in January

To me the first month of the brand new year is about going back to the basics, remembering and reminding the simplest things. So, my layouts this month are like letters to my kids.My first layout is based on this month's FOCUS idea. I have tried to capture the feel of that focus in color and texture.

I was chatting with one of my kid's teachers and she said that one very early morning, she felt like doughnuts and decided to drive through Dunkin Donuts. When she reached, she tried placing an order... once, twice, thrice, and she was really mad that no one responded...then she noticed that she wasn't talking to the microphone... she was talking to the trash can!!!
Today I feel like that :)
It has been SO BUSY and I'm exhausted. Today I called someone I have known for a while and actually pronounced her name wrong!!!
I should nap.

Already writing down my resolutions for 2012... some are repeat resolutions, things that I want to stick to; some new because circumstances have changed with time... I may not fulfill them all this coming year, but I'll try to make some progress in each and hope to accomplish some!
I'm coming to terms with a few things such as not everything can be wrapped up neatly... some things are just better off left alone and somewhat undone... trying to let go of the emotional burden of "unfinished business" and move on to the next thing. Looking at life as work in progress and if it bothers bystanders, all I can say is 'Please, pardon the dust'...

Found this wonderful quote the other day and loved it.

Faber-Castell Aquarelle pencils

Back in October, when I went to teach at Oh My Crafts' Discovering Possibilities event, many of the students wanted to know how to use the Aquarelle watercolor pencils. So, I have been experimenting with these pencils. Let me share with you one of the simple things I learned.
Usually, I associate palette knives with oil and acrylic paints, but I found that they work great with watercolors too.
First I colored on my art journal page with several shades of the same color.

Then spritzed it with water lightly. I blended the colors and moved them around with a few quick strokes of the palette knife.

Once the background dried, I wrote on it, stamped and embellished it.

Feels like 2011 went by in a jiffy and I'm already gearing up for 2012. In recent years, I have been putting my goals, plans and resolutions in little handmade books. It's a check list kind of thing. Not all goals are profound, there are some super simple to do lists in it as well. But I like to check things off and write about progress, challenges, working around hindrances, and finding ways to move forward... it's a process journal.

I have finished putting together my Resolutions Art Journal for 2012. In journals like this, I love playing, experimenting, finding my true style at the moment. Here's a look at some of the pages inside.

This Friday, we kicked off our winter holiday with dinner at Asian buffet and a movie "Hugo" in 3D... I LOVED the message of this movie. Check it out, it will touch your heart!
I also started writing in my Happy Holidays journal yesterday, now that our Holidays have started officially :)

Did much-needed cleaning up downstairs and got some Christmas decor out. Each year, little things get added to the collection. The kids love it when I include their artwork into the mix. Right now, they are getting ready to build a gingerbread house and that's where I want to be :)

Hi, here are my Glitz layouts for December!My first layout is about my son's letter to Santa. Even though the Glitz collections are not prominently Holiday themed, but if you close enough, you'll find little nuggets that lend themselves to Holiday layouts. For instance, the epoxy sticker that I cut to say 'letter to' or the paper layer that says 'everything nice' that I stitched to highlight 'nice'.

For my second layout, I cut out birds from the Dance in the Sunshine 12x12 Birds Paper. I stitched 'wires' across the page and perched the cut out birds on them.

Yesterday, we had a visitor...

Om spotted him in our backyard while he was playing outside... the gator was about 5 feet long head to tail tip sporting mighty fangs... shiny and unperturbed! This, however, isn't new to us... we used to get many more of them only few years back basking in the winter sun... used to freak my mom out when Nini was very young as she, being her mother's daughter, was always immensely curious about everything!

School was out for a whole week which was a great respite from early mornings... We went to Legoland, Universal Studios, and stayed at the Nick Hotel. The kids had a blast!!! I LOVED all the details of the Harry Potter castle and man, I hate riding roller coasters... Om wasn't big enough for a few rides and was somewhat grumpy about it. My legs are still killing me from all the walking... in fact, we postponed our tickets to Sea World because of that... overall, nice break from routine.

On the art front, been busy making my next Etsy kit for the new year and editing photos for printing as well as preparing some Christmas gifts. Will share pics asap :)

Art journal page with Aquarelle pencils

I lightly sketched lines on the journal page.

Filled the sections with colors using art grip Aquarelle pencils.

Blended the colors with wet brush

When dry, I journaled on the page using PITT artists pen

I let a little water drip down and wrote 'Favorite Season' with Aquarelle pencils on the wet surface to finish the page.

Glitz layouts for November

Hi everyone, here are my Glitz layouts for November...
For my first layout, I turned to each new collection because as beautiful as they are individually, I think they work together wonderfully too.

I used a rose frame from Beautiful Dreamer Peek-A-Boos. I stamped the Vintage Blue rose onto scrap cardstock with a Ranger Archival Sepia Ink Pad and used watercolor pencils to color it a similar shade as the rose in the frame. Then I cut it out and layered with pop dots next to the frame.

I journaled in the little ornate label printed on the Beautiful Dreamer Houndstooth paper and added a Vintage Blue lace trim to finish.

My second layout is also a combination of all three collections.

Home again

It was a WONDERFUL weekend...
I got to see Fall colors in the Utah mountains, thanks to these lovely editors of Creating Keepsakes who were so gracious to sacrifice their Friday evenings to take me out to dinner at Ruth's Diner and a small drive to a local monument. We watched the sun set, SLC light up for the night and did some souvenir shopping. The food at Ruth's was delicious and the conversation hilarious!

And then there was Saturday, a day filled with delightful women and creativity thanks to Faber-Castell Design Memory Crafts and Oh My Crafts!

And now exhausted and catching up with laundry :)

Good things happened when Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and Jaime Echt of The Crafters Workshop came together to create trendy lovely stencils! Ever since Jaime gave me some of those beauties, I have been playing... let me just admit that I find them irresistible! And sometimes I use several stencils in one project too... like this one:

I used the 'Trust Your Heart' and 'If You Believe' 6"x6" stencils with spray mists, watercolor pencils gelatos and a stamp to create this 9"x12" poster.

Another glorious summer

Today is bittersweet for me... today is the last day of summer vacation. The last 73 days have been fun at times, stressful at times and sweet at times... it was hard when there were tight deadlines and the kids fought relentlessly; it was sweet when mornings didn't have to start so early; it was awesome doing things with the kids or just do nothing and hang out quietly resting on each other... there were things we would have loved to do more if we had the time, but just having them at home was wonderful! Tomorrow we settle back, or struggle to settle into a new routine of early mornings, rush rush, sudden quiet, bus stops, chess clubs, homework and more... looking forward to it all, but can't ignore the sense of time passing all too quickly and the urge to fill more life into it!

This is what the stamps look like. And these are the inkpads I used.

I stamped and cut out the buttons and used the Sizzix embosslit buttons die (the embosslits emboss and cut all at the same time!) with color core cardstock and gently sanded them.
Once all my buttons were ready, I arranged them near the photo and moved them around till I liked the look. Then I attached the buttons, some with foam tape to add dimension. A few more elements later, here's the finished layout.

Recently as I was organizing my stash, I found that over the years the item I have collected the most are stamps! Like many of you, I am fond of stamping. My woodmount stamps have long become part of my studio decor. Some of my very favorite stamps are from Stampin' Up! I was introduced to their products back in 2006 when I got an incredibly generous selection as part of my CK Scrapbooker of The Year 2006 finalist prize pack. Ever since, I have used those stamps time and again and loved them. You can check out the latest Stampin' Up! catalogs here.
I'm so grateful for the wonderful products they have come up with and have kindly sent my way. Let me share with you a card I created using their older and new goodies.

I'm glad I went to the crop at Whim So Doodle with Kelly on Friday... it was fun to see Anita and Katie again... seriously, while I was there, I only shopped and cropped nothing...huh!

I used the 7 Gypsies Lille chipboard alphas for the title. I love this notebook edge punch by EK Success... there's something about edge punches that I can't resist... I have quite the collection of EK and Martha Stewart punches now! That grid paper is from Bella Blvd. and the kraft cardstock from Michaels. Journaling pen is from Faber-Castell. School themed stickers are handmade by me. Adhesives are by Scotch 3M.

My Glitz layouts for August

As we are gearing up for the coming school year, all things related to studies and the first day of school are on my mind. You'll see the reflection of those thoughts on my layouts this month. However, instead of taking the traditional primary bright color route for such layouts, I wanted to experiment with elegance as I find my Glitz products really versatile that easily lend themselves to any theme. Here's my first page.

From pink harlequin to swallow to butterflies, I wanted to use them all...

My second layout is about the simple truth of time flying by all too quickly and children growing up in the blink of an eye and attending milestones. For this layout, I tried the artsy mixed media style.

In this layout, I used two sets of newly released stencils from The Crafter's Workshop. Both the clouds and raindrops come in 12x12 as well as 6x6 making it so much fun to layer them. I'm home... exhausted yet renewed and refreshed!

Here's the super cute and sweet Megan Hoeppner, CK's Creative Editor rubbing the belly of this little cut out boy at the Doodlebug Booth.

It was so much fun to see my friends again and meet new ones. I roomed with Jen and learned a lot about the busines of wine even though I never drink. Just because we wanted to hang out a little longer, we left for the airport together and even though we had no time left to just sit and chill, we dragged our tired bodies and luggage from one end of the airport to the other... together :)

Revisiting watercolor

For the last few days, I had been playing with watercolor again. Watercolor makes me happy... in fact, painting in general does... a hobby that took a backseat after the kids were born. I needed a more forgiving medium that did not dry while I was gone, something that stayed as is and I could revisit and alter and that's when I found scrapbooking. Learned a few things along the way... then, I wanted to experiment with collage and watercolor, not acrylic and this is what I have... memories of Sunday mornings bygone...

Here are my Glitz layouts for July.
Summer is in full swing here and so are activities. I'm having a blast taking photos of the things that say summer to me. One such thing is the kids in the pool and also the subject of my first layout.

I stamped the post card onto the solid side of the Love Games Damask paper. Then I drew a fish on it, colored it, cut it out and used it as an accent.

And here's my second layout about a day out with my friend and kids.

I had been trying to clean and organize my studio a bit and got lost in admiring all the pretty papers and embellishments and more. I did, however, manage to organize all of my wood-mounted rubber stamps. While I was doing that, I found this photo that had somehow escaped from the box. So, I left whatever I was doing and sat down to scrap it. The paper is from an older GCD studios collection. The letters in the title are diecut using the Sizzix Typeset Sizzlits die... boy, I haven't loved a diecut alpha this much in a while! I used the Scotch 3M Quick dry adhesive to glue those letters in place. And of course, I had to paint a little. I embellished the page with my own hadmade accents. I found that the Faber-Castell Multimark 1523 permanent pen works great for writing on dry paint. I have to tell you that creating this page made me smile... such sweet memories... revisiting a place as a changed person is something else!

As I was going through all of our recent cruise photos, I stopped at one where my daughter was standing in front of a wall... the wall had a design of a woman leaning out of a window with a plate of fruits in her hand. The background was just as important as the subject in front of it. To highlight the lovely Victorian image, I decided to layer clusters of roses cut out of the Laced with Grace Floral paper.

For my second layout and in honor of Father's Day, I created a page about a funny family anecdote from a few years back.

This mini letter stickers are my absolute favorite for creating long titles.

To create the banner at the top of the page, I simply cut the banner from the Afternoon Muse Banner paper. But instead of attaching it right side up, I flipped it to reveal the pretty pink scripty/musical note side.

Recently, Kelly Marie Alvarez of Lawn Fawn stamps sent me two very cute clear stamp sets:
My Silly Valentine and Plus One. For today's tutorial, I used the valentine set. Even though it says valentine, they are also great for everyday love and friendship projects.

I stamped them onto cream cardstock and made tags out of them.
I colored the stamped images with watercolor pencils for a soft look.

3. Now these tags would great as journaling spots, gift tags or even on cards.

4. Personalize the card by writing the name and coloring it in with the same pencils.

My first layout is in honor of mothers everywhere... and how motherhood changes you.

I added my title using Cream Teeny Alpha right onto my self-portrait and placed the transparent overlay on top of the photo.

I attached handcut butterflies around the transparency to hide my adhesive.

Love how this butterfly has two young faces on its wings... perfectly meaningful accent as they represent my two kids for me.

My second layout is rather bittersweet... about the fleeting childhood days of my kids. How I want them to grow up and see and be proud of what they become and yet, there's a part in me that wants to hold on to them just like they are right now!

I free handcut two flower stems and attached them near the photo using foam tape for some added dimension.

I added a torn boder from Laced With Grace Rose paper with illustrations of children and pets playing together to finish my page.
