Christmas in July with Sizzix

Hi everyone, Mou here with a Christmas in July idea for you today. Whenever I can manage, I like to wrap the gifts I give... you know, to add a little personal touch. These days I'm inspired by chalkboards and burlaps as I see various lovely trendy ideas everywhere I go. I wanted to incorporate the texture of burlap and chalkboard along with some homemade gift toppers created with Sizzix dies. Let me tell you how I created this gift topper using Jen Long's Sizzix Thinlits Die set Christmas Ornament, Wreath and Vine and Embossing Folders set Christmas Lights and Holly.

First of all, cut 12 inches x 12 inches cream cardstock into four 6 inches x 6 inches pieces. Color each piece using any one shade of green Gelatos colors. You could use any kind of paint for this as long as you are using four different shades of green. Let the colors dry thoroughly. You could even use color cardstock for this. I use Gelatos colors because I love the painterly look. You will be using these pieces for die-cutting your Wreaths.

Cut another piece of cream cardstock to 4 inches x 5 inches and color it with red Gelatos color for the Ornament. You can use red cardstock for this as well.

Cut a piece of cream cardstock to 5 inches x 7 inches. Color it with Black Chalkboard paint. This will be the piece you will emboss. If you don't have chalkboard paint, you could also use white core black cardstock as a close substitute.

To die-cut a Wreath, create the following Sizzix sandwich: lay a Sizzix Accessory Standard Cutting Pad on Sizzix Accessory Standard Magnetic Platform for Wafer-Thin Dies. Lay one of the green colored cardstocks, cover it with a piece of wax paper for easier release, lay the Wreath die blade side down on the papers and cover with the other Standard Cutting Pad. Pass the entire sandwich through the Sizzix Big Shot machine. The strong magnets of the Magnetic Platform will hold the Thinlits die in place for a precise cut of the intricate design. Repeat with the other three green pieces of cardstock.

Now, die-cutting the Ornament is a two-step process because it has an embossing detail.

First, die-cut the ornament by creating this Sizzix sandwich: lay a Standard Cutting Pad on the Standard Magnetic Platform for Wafer-Thin Dies. Lay the red colored cardstock, cover it with a piece of wax paper for easier release, lay the Ornament die blade side down on the papers and cover with the other Standard Cutting Pad. Pass the entire sandwich through the Sizzix Big Shot machine.

Second, to emboss the detail in the die-cut Ornament, leave the paper in the die and create another Sizzix sandwich: lay a Standard Cutting Pad on Tab 2 of Sizzix Accessory Extended Multipurpose Platform. Lay the Ornament die blade side up, lay the Sizzix Accessory Silicon Rubber on top and cover with the Sizzix Accessory Impressions Pad. Pass the entire sandwich through the Sizzix Big Shot machine. When you release the diecut Ornament, you will see the embossed detail. Enhance the detail with metallic dimensional paint. Let dry thoroughly before handling again.

To emboss the Holly design on the chalkboard paper, place the paper inside the Holly Embossing Folder and place the folder between a pair of Standard Cutting Pads. Lay the stack on Tab 2 of the Extended Multipurpose Platform. Pass the entire Sizzix sandwich through the Big Shot machine to emboss. Gently sand the raised design to accentuate it. Cut all around to your desired size.

To create the topper, all you need to do now is to stack all the above pieces together and staple them. Arrange the Wreaths in an uneven manner so you can you can see the variations in color. Place the Ornament near the top. Hold these pieces near the top edge of the chalkboard embossed Holly card and staple just in one spot while the other parts lay free. Write a Christmas word with dimensional metallic paint or use a chalk to write your recipient's name to finish.

Wrap your gift with burlap. Tie with ribbon. Attach the topper to the gift with adhesive to finish.
